How Long Does a Keratin Treatment Last?

Hair is comprised of a protein called keratin. It works to smooth the overlapping cells of hair called the cuticle. Keratin treatments can help in keeping the cuticle smoother and revitalizing damaged hair. Keratin treatments are especially beneficial for those with curly hair that experience frizzies, but it’s advantageous for any type of hair. The length of time a keratin treatment lasts depends on several factors.

Individuals should be aware that keratin treatments are helpful in repairing damaged hair, make it stronger, and less likely to break. However, keratin treatments that are performed too often can actually damage hair.

Washing

After care is extremely important. As long as individuals care for their keratin treated hair appropriately, the effects can last up to 6 months. That typically means avoiding washing hair for three days, but that can vary, depending on what type of keratin treatment a person gets. Consult with the technician.

Wash locks no more than 2 to 3 times per week following the initial wait time if at all possible. For those that go to the gym, blow dry hair immediately after working out to eliminate moisture from sweating. It can adversely affect the treatment, just as much as washing.

No Sulfates or Clarifiers

Look for shampoos and conditioners that contain no sulfates. Products containing a kind of salt known as sulfate will shorten the lifespan of the treatment. Avoid clarifying shampoos as they strip the hair of the treatment and can cause uneven results.

Hair Down

Hair is going to be vulnerable for the first three days immediately following the treatment. It’s critical that individuals leave their hair loose and free during that time. Avoid hair ties, decorative pins or clasps, ponytails, and tucking hair behind the ears to prevent denting or creasing of the hair.

Silk Pillowcase

Using a silk pillowcase reduces friction on hair and aids in less tangling. Hair will be more prone to damage with a traditional cotton pillowcase. A silk pillowcase is advised for use all the time.
