Is Apple Cider Vinegar a Good Rinse for Your Hair?
Any number of home remedies have been used through the centuries to address scalp problems and create a lustrous mane. There’s one treatment that has the support of science and that’s apple cider vinegar.
A mixture of apple cider vinegar and water makes a rejuvenating rinse. Mix 2 to 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 16 ounces of water. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual, rinse, and pour the mixture over hair. Never put apple cider vinegar directly on the hair or scalp without diluting it first.
Work the mixture evenly through your hair and into the scalp. Let it set for about 2 minutes before rinsing it out. The smell will dissipate after it’s rinsed out, but if the odor is too strong for your nose, a couple of drops of essential oil can be added to the mix.
The rinse lowers the pH level of the hair and scalp. The formula aids in reducing itchiness and scalp infections. Apple cider vinegar is a natural antibacterial and antifungal. Even though it’s good for your hair, limit rinses to a maximum of twice per week.
A mane that’s dry, frizzy or brittle has a higher pH value. Apple cider vinegar is made from apples through a fermentation process. That process imbues the vinegar with acids, vitamins and minerals that are highly beneficial and aids in reducing breakage. It exfoliates the scalp and it’s a natural anti-inflammatory. Apple cider vinegar strengthens hair, enhances shine, and improves scalp health.
A word of caution about apple cider vinegar. The rinse is designed to balance pH levels. Using it too often can exacerbate any existing scalp conditions. If this happens, stop using it and wait until symptoms have subsided. Lower the amount of apple cider vinegar in the mix when you begin using it again.
