Home Remedies for Split Ends
Split ends are the bane of sleek and healthy hair. Dozens of hair products are marketed to repair hair and terminate the frizziness that comes with split ends. What people may not know is that there are multiple measures they can take and a variety of effective home remedies to minimize split ends.
Trimming
The first step in the battle is to keep hair regularly trimmed. It’s a quick and easy way to get rid of existing split ends.
Sun Protection
Sun is just as damaging to hair as it is to skin. Cover hair with a hat when outdoors or apply a product with a sun screen.
Chemicals and Hot Tools
Avoid applying products containing chemicals such as dyes and straighteners when split ends are present and limit the use of hot styling tools. For individuals that insist on using styling tools, turn the heat down, use a diffuser, and hold blow dryers at least 6 inches away from the scalp.
Masks
Treat locks to a hair mask once a week or at least once per month. It moisturizes and deep conditions hair with vitamins, minerals and proteins. A moisturizing hair mask can be made at home by combining 1 or 2 eggs with a teaspoon of olive oil before thoroughly washing. A spoon full of honey can be added if desired for hair that’s soft and shiny. Individuals can also apply unflavored yogurt to moisturize and add sheen. Let it set a bit, then wash out.
Combing
Never brush hair when its wet – always use a wide-toothed comb. Begin at the ends and slowly work toward the scalp to detangle while minimizing damage. Use a gentle touch.
Warm Wash, Cool Rinse
Washing and rinsing with hot water weakens the roots and dries the scalp. It also strips locks of natural oils that leads to breakage. A warm water wash preserves hair and a cold-water rinse helps smooth and seal strands.
Less Frequent Washing
Hair doesn’t absolutely need to be washed every day. Frequent washing strips hair of natural oils that helps keep it healthy and shiny looking. Dry hair is more likely to develop split ends than hair that’s hydrated. Use a mild shampoo and wash 2 to 3 times per week unless hair is particularly oily.
